Cocktails with - Nancy Dell'Olio
Styling in Donna Karan for the state dinner for Prince Henry of Wales (popularly known as Prince Harry) at King’s House last Tuesday evening, the svelte and sassy Nancy Dell'Olio makes for great company at the dinner table. Dell’Olio, an Italian-American, traded in her property law career for a run in showbiz (she hosted Footballers Cribs on UK's MTV, was a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing and has just joined the News International Sun on Sunday team). Dell'Olio, whose partner is Sir Trevor Dunn, artistic director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, excuses herself from the dinner table to chat — glass of wine in hand for intermittent sips.
How are you enjoying the state dinner for Prince Henry?
It’s nice to share company with the Prince and the Jamaican people. It's a great evening. The music, drinks and food are all excellent.
Is this your first visit to Jamaica?
It is. I've been enjoying it so far and I’m looking forward to the rest of the week for my holiday.
What are your impressions of the island?
It's been very positive. I feel at home. I love to visit places I've never been before and meet new people. I have a fantastic friend in London, Theresa Roberts, who is from Jamaica. It is a warm country, and one thing that caught my attention, is that you are a special kind. You're a warm, kind people and very caring.
Are you a socialite or a homebody?
I'm definitely sociable, but at the same time I enjoy when I can be at home.
Flats or stilettos?
What are flats? They don't exist in my world. Definitely high heels… Louboutins.
Jeans or LBD?
I love LBDs, but I also love my jeans as well.
How would you describe Nancy Dell'Olio?
The most beautiful, amazing woman in the world.
What prompted the transition from a law career to showbiz?
Sometimes it's not us making the decisions; life takes your hand and makes the decisions for you and I think in life it is boring to have just one career. I'm having two or three so far and I'm going to be an actress. Anytime you are in touch with your inner child, everyday you can change your life.
So, film is the next phase of your showbiz career?
It's a work in progress and in discussion. I'm reading and also writing a script. It's for a TV series.
Is it for the BBC or any English TV channels?
We'll see who is going to pay better (laughs).
What's the best piece of advice you've ever received?
Always try to be in touch with yourself and be yourself, there's nothing more important.
Who does your hair?
Many people around the world. They are all freelancers. I don't go to them, darling, they come to me.
What do you think is your greatest accomplishment?
Being a successful, inspirational woman.
What is your idea of the perfect date?
There is no one perfect date. He has to pay me a lot of attention. He has to know that I only drink Reserve champagne. Of course, there has to be the right chemistry.
What's your idea of the perfect man?
There is more than one perfect man…you would need two, three or four of them to make the perfect man. I like a handsome man who is intelligent, sensitive, charming and who pays me a lot of attention.
Who is your celebrity crush?
Prince Harry; I realised (that) tonight (laughs).
What's your must-have accessory?
Shoes. I have over a hundred pairs.
How do you relax when you're not working?
I like to think and listen to music, and to be in nature and open space, or by the sea. I think the elements of nature are very important.
Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?
I'll be around the world, not in any one particular country.
What was your most memorable moment on Strictly Come Dancing?
I had a few memorable moments. One great moment was when I started a dance coming out of a coffin for our Halloween episode. I had many fantastic moments. In fact, I just finished the Strictly Come Dancing tour around the UK and I never enjoyed an experience so much in my life.
Do you plan on crossing paths with Prince Harry again during the rest of your trip?
No, no, no (laughs). I'm going to go back to my holiday. At the same time, I'm here doing a photo shoot as well to promote Jamaica.
