There is just something about being in Opposition

Dear Editor,

Eureka! I have found it!

The solution to our many challenges as a nation is to let Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition form the executive branch of government without actually becoming the government.

There is just something about being in Opposition. You suddenly gain wisdom of Solomonic proportion and you have the solution to every challenge you could not solve when you formed the Government.

For example, the People's National Party (PNP) in Government had a crime plan to pray for “divine intervention”, but as the Opposition they are demanding that the Government come up with a plan to tame the crime monster or they will “rouse” the population to action.

The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) in Opposition denounced the PNP's use of National Housing Trust (NHT) funds for budgetary support as a wicked, criminal act deserving of court action. After replacing the PNP in Government, the JLP had no qualms about using the same NHT funds for budgetary support.

The PNP in Government negotiated a wage freeze with public sector unions. At the end of the wage freeze the Government could not find the money to give civil servants a double-digit increase in salary, but now, in Opposition, the PNP is standing in solidarity with workers and demanding that the Government find the money to satisfy double-digit wage demands.

Do you remember when the PNP, in Opposition, trumpeted the Cabinet was too big and demanded a reduction in its size? That concern for size dissipated when, as Government, it appointed a bigger Cabinet than the one deemed too big!

How about the JLP in Opposition declaring, “The country has reached its taxable limit.” Then, in Government imposing what some (mainly the PNP) claim was the largest tax package in the country's history.

Just think about it. The PNP was in charge of the country's affairs for 22 of the last 28 years while the situation at Cornwall Regional Hospital deteriorated, and now they are calling for the resignation of the current minister of health for not solving the problem in two years.

I don't know what it is about being in Government that causes politicians to lose the wisdom, creativity and problem-solving skills they possessed when they formed the Opposition in Gordon House. What is abundantly clear, however, is the best Government is the Opposition!

So there you have it! The solution to our problems (economic, social and otherwise) is to find a way to make the Opposition govern without becoming the Government.
