Dear Editor,

I advise that employers ensure that they offer, or recommend, a series of fully funded first aid training programmes to at least two reliable and trustworthy individuals in each of its departments, and also host awareness sessions to the remaining staff.

Additionally, employers should equip each office with sufficient first aid supplies.

These initiatives should be subjected to regular inspection and attract a penalty for violations.

We have a culture where we wait until something goes wrong before we act, and I do not think that many people take these kinds of matters seriously.

No one can predict when a co-worker across the office will suddenly suffer injury. The lack of knowledge of how to execute a first aid response within the first few seconds of noticeable symptoms could be the determining factor between survival and death.
