Dear Editor,

I note a Jamaica Observer news story that one police division in St Andrew is said to be the home of some 48 gangs. And the police blame that area for the majority of murders in Jamaica.

Has it occurred to anybody what this means?

Let's do a little “what if” exercise.

All Jamaicans would like to see the murder rate reduced dramatically. Right?

Next, the majority of people would want to see it even halved. OK so far?

What if that police division suddenly and magically had a 50-foot-high wall appear all around it. The result would magically reduce the country's murder rate by more than half!

Shouldn't the police also consider a cordon and search operation for the area since we know the gang make-up there?

Wouldn't Jamaicans like that?

Imagine reducing the murder rate by more than half in one fell swoop!

Back to reality people. Politics would never allow this.
