Dear Editor,

It is with great national pride that I extend congratulations to the Jamaican female football team now on its way to the FIFA Women's World Cup.

This comes some 20 years after the men's team's qualification.

What the women have done is no small feat.

The time, effort and resources put into the programme has paid off.

But, at the same time, one hopes that the scant regard in terms of sponsorship given to the female football premier league will change. More needs to be done.

Olivia “Babsy” Grange, the minister of culture, gender, entertainment and sport, and her team must be beaming with joy. In one week she presented a splendid and far-reaching national awards ceremony, with truly deserving recipients the likes of Grace Jones, Joan Andrea Hutchinson and others, then the Girlz's qualification to the World Cup. It's like icing on the cake.

Congratulations to Jamaica Football Federation President Michael Ricketts and his team. Job well done. Let's hope sponsors with deep pockets locally and in the Diaspora will get on board in the funding of programme.

Andrea Dunk
