A sad set of conditions

Dear Editor,While I slept in comfort during the rains I could not help but empathise with people whose homes were flooded.

I remember my home in Jones Town leaking profusely after Gilbert in 1988 and how it felt so uncomfortable. However, it was no way as bad as what I continue to see, flood after flood after flood, in Jamaica.

I still blame our 63 Members of Parliament for the suffering of Jamaicans after these disasters. The prime minister said it was no photo-op, and he is right, because the pictures should have been taken while he and his Government were signing off on disaster mitigation systems and planning proposals to identify the vulnerable areas.

We still have leadership in both parties who play hide and seek with Jamaica's development, as we have Olivia “Babsy” Grange worrying about legacy projects and building statues with taxpayers' monies. Yes, we want to honour Usain Bolt, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and the others, but we have more people in need in Jamaica than titles and honours. If I were Bolt I would either contribute to these statues or ask for them not to be built.

I do not buy the argument that it is solely poor drain cleaning and or people throwing stuff in gullies.
