Why is JUTA not represented on JTB board?

Wednesday, February 15, 2012

Dear Editor,

I note that Minister of Tourism Wykeham McNeill has put together the board of directors for the Jamaica Tourist Board. What was rather surprising to me was that not one member of the Jamaica Union of Travellers Association (JUTA) was appointed to this board, which is of national importance.

Let me remind the readers of the free press that JUTA is the largest transportation organisation in the tourist industry and not only from Negril to Morant Point, but also the two international airports. They are seen in their numbers everywhere. One would have thought that common sense would have prevailed and that JUTA would have been included. The organisation was started over 30 years ago by the then Minister of Tourism PJ Patterson, and since its formation has demonstrated that it is the essential embodying ingredient for a successful tourism industry.

JUTA was formed to challenge the status quo, and that we did with credit. We hold no grudge for those who have been so appointed, but common sense dictates that the people's transport organisation and those who mingle and speak to the visitors about our culture, heritage and our passion to see this country grow should not be ignored.

The question that one could easily ask is: Are there competent people in JUTA to sit on the board? The answer is yes! We may not represent those who have boardrooms in high-rise buildings with imported furniture, but members of JUTA do have the credentials to sell our country positively.

I write this letter passionately and I know that it might disturb those of the status quo, but the best tourism product of all is the people. The success or failure of any organisation depends on people and JUTA is a people organisation.
