JPs' protest against Porteous betrays our noble office

Monday, January 30, 2012

Dear Editor,

As a justice of the peace and former member of the executive of the Manchester Lay Magistrates Association, I would like to share my personal disapproval of the way justices of the peace have been dealing with the appointment of Ms Sally Porteous as the custos of the parish. The protest by JPs at the installation is in poor taste and betrays the noble office for which we all have pledged to give our loyal support.

Dr Gilbert Allen was an outstanding custos and served the parish with distinction. I initially supported the procedure for the naming of Ms Porteous before her appointment as JP, but we have made our point to the outgoing prime minister, and must now move on.

Ms Sally Porteous has demonstrated over the years her commitment to service and the public good - we must now accept the appointment and work with her. I speak personally, but I know that I am not alone, there are many JPs who feel that Ms Sally Porteous must be supported and given a fair chance to represent all of us in the parish.

The people of Manchester have a proud record and must stand in solidarity to maintain and develop our parish. We should not allow political biases to divide and destroy the need for growth and development. Political parties come and go. They are voted in or out at the will of the voters. The prime minister still has the right to recommend to the governor general a person to be named as custos rotulorum of any parish. This is our country, this parish is our home! We must come forward and build it so that the coming generation will rise up and call us blessed! Long live Manchester, the centre of excellence and pride, the educational hub of Jamaica!

Several known supporters of the PNP have been appointed to that position. I can see no legal or moral basis for Ms Porteous to withdraw.

The JLP will support Sally Porteous regardless and the PNP will not support her regardless with each tribe claiming their own self righteousness. My solution, find a compromise that allows each side to save face. Sally should withdraw saying it was for reason of health or that her family has asked her to withdraw because of the stress the stampede was causing on them. In the meantime, the GG should exercise the office of Custos of Manchester.

Assassination by anonymous e-mail is awful!
