Don’t use taxpayers’ money for political succession

Dear Editor,
I have a political issue that should be of utmost concern to all citizens and residents of Jamaica. However, I must first congratulate Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller on her recent victory at the polls.
Much concern has been raised about the size of the new Cabinet in view of our economic predicament. However, the real issue of concern is the reason given by the prime minister for such a large Cabinet – leadership succession.
One is tempted to ask: whose leadership? Is it the leadership succession of the people of Jamaica or that of the People’s National Party? Most likely the latter – from all indications. If that is the case, why should public money be used to pay the salary of a particular party’s leadership succession at the expense of other parties and non-party affiliates?
I believe that any party in government should sponsor its political succession from party funds and not use taxpayers’ money. Using taxpayers’ money to pay the salary of political stalwarts who are appointed to leadership positions for the purpose of leadership succession of a particular party is disadvantageous to other parties and tantamount to mismanagement of public funds. This does not make the political arena a level playing field for all political parties.
My final question is: whom should the ordinary Jamaican turn to for help when treated unfairly? Or are we left helpless like Job in the Bible who could not find a judge to adjucate between himself and God?

Where do the persons who make up the government come from? Even if one has leadership experience outside of government one need to learn how the day to day operations of the government work and the only way to learn is to be in the position. MP just dont get elected and start being fully functional from day one.
