Letters to the Editor

Congratulations, Sally

Monday, February 06, 2012

Dear Editor,

I join with all well-thinking citizens of Manchester in applauding the appointment of Miss Sally Porteous as custos for the parish, and I hope all those "justices" who did not behave as justices of the peace would either resign or be asked to tender their resignation to make way for those who are prepared to uphold the dignity of the office.

Those who think she should be disqualified on the grounds that she is a white woman are as ignorant as Hitler was for thinking that there was any such thing as a pure race. There are those among us who appear to be white, but of black ancestry, just like yours truly, who like his children would be classified as black, but have white ancestry. There is only one race and it is the human race of many and varied colours like all the animals and plants on this planet, which contribute to the beauty of the world.

Finally, I am calling upon the government to investigate and report to the public why the private media was excluded from the ceremony. The response of the governor general is far from satisfactory, particularly because we have not heard of anyone being sanctioned. The exclusion is a dangerous precedent in our democracy, which does not condone, since our so-called Independence, the legal maxim, "The Queen can do no wrong", and in any case, powers delegated to the governor general confer no right to fetter freedom of the private media.

In a way this poetic justice - of sort; the media now get a taste of how it feel when the sensor writers. Too often we see underhanded acts committed by our public officials and they nonchalantly say sorry and expect it to go away. They should know that they will be held accountable. The GG and or his underlings must be held accountable for the snub of the media. Just saying sorry does not make it right or make it go away.

Assassination by anonymous e-mail is awful!
