Weekly Round-up: UK deportation row… 3-day extension of school year … Cop chopped

Sunday, April 22, 2018

KINGSTON, Jamaica — British Prime Minister Theresa May on Tuesday apologised for the anxiety caused to Caribbean leaders after her Government threatened to deport some of the hundreds of thousands of people who emigrated to Britain from the region in the 1950s and 1960s.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness, in response, said he wanted a speedy solution and called on the UK government to ensure “fair and just” compensation for people of the so-called Windrush generation and their children.

Meanwhile, tempers in the education system are just below boiling point in response to a Ministry of Education circular effectively extending the academic year by three days, a move teachers have suggested is a direct response to their sick-out on March 12-14 as wage negotiations with the Government came to a head.

On the crime scene, a Manchester policeman sustained chop wounds to his face and other sections of his body on Tuesday during an unprovoked attack by a man said to be of unsound mind.

A bystander was reportedly shot and injured as the lawman fired shots in his defence.
