ST JAMES, Jamaica — American coffee chain Starbucks is set to open a second store Jamaica within the next four months, after opening its first store in late last year in the tourism capital of Montego Bay in St James.

“We are actually expanding soon. Our Kingston store is opening soon. We are hoping by this summer, and actually today (Saturday) we have a job fair going on to recruit persons for our Kingston location,” disclosed Nicola Groves, marketing coordinator for Starbucks in Jamaica.

The Kingston branch is expected to be in the Liguanea Plaza.

Groves noted that Jamaicans have embraced the company which opened its doors in November on the Montego Bay Hipstrip.

“We definitely have our fair share of competition. But, I feel like we are open to the competition and there is room for everyone and I think it is doing well. I think Jamaicans have really embraced the Starbucks culture,” stated Groves.

She said the customer base is split 50/50 between Jamaicans and tourist alike.

“It is actually pretty 50/50. Surprisingly, given the location where it is in the heart of the tourist town that have our fair share of locals coming in every single day. We have our regulars that come in every single day and order the same thing, and then we have our fair share of tourist coming in through the crew ships and also those who are staying in the hotels nearby,” added Groves.

She was speaking with OBSERVER ONLINE following a Starbucks and YUTE - Day of Service programme held at the Garland Hall Memorial Children's Home in Anchovy, St James yesterday.

Starbucks Foundation and The MultiCare Youth Foundation (MYF) through its Youth Upliftment Through Employment (YUTE) programme and training partners, the HEART Trust NTA had collaborated for the programme in St James where the group provided a sustainable vegetable garden, lawn chairs and books to the home.

This project forms part of Starbucks community outreach programme.

Starbucks Corporation is an American coffee company and coffee house chain which was founded in 1971 in Seattle, Washington .

The company currently has over 27 thousand locations across the world.
