Weekly Round-up: McLean gets six life sentences... Carnival phone thief nabbed… Historic Commonwealth gold

Sunday, April 15, 2018

KINGSTON, Jamaica — On Thursday, St Thomas businessman Micheal McLean, who murdered six members of a family in St Thomas in 2006, was on Thursday given a life sentence in prison on each count.
He was ordered to serve 20 years on each before being eligible for parole.

In other news, a man was charged with breaches of the Larceny Act on Monday after he was held with several cellular phones and items of jewellery at the end of the Carnival Road March in Kingston on Sunday.

And in sport, Jamaica missed out on a few coveted first place finishes at the 2018 Commonwealth Games currently underway in Gold Coast Australia after seasoned athletes Elaine Thompson and Yohan Blake failed to strike gold.

There were however a few surprises as Shericka Jackson secured the silver in 200m on Thursday with a personal best ahead of Thompson who was placed fourth.

Yohan Blake in the meantime stumbled to a bronze place finish behind the South African pair of Akani Simbine and Henricho Bruintjies who copped gold and silver respectively on Monday night.

The biggest surprise of all came from Aisha Praught on Wednesday when she stunned Celliphine Chespol of Kenya to win the gold medal for the 3,000m steeplechase.
