KINGSTON, Jamaica — A lance corporal in the Jamaica Defence Force was convicted of Breaches of the Dangerous Drugs Act when he appeared before the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Thursday.

The constabulary's Corporate Communication's Unit (CCU) said the soldier — 33-year-old Sedon Maxwell, of Jeffery Town, St Mary — was arrested at the Norman Manley International Airport on June 18, 2017 after he attempted to export five pounds of cocaine on an Air Canada flight, which was destined for Toronto, Canada.

The cocaine, which the police said has an estimated street value of $3 million, was reportedly found in Maxwell's luggage when it was searched during routine checks at the airport.

He was subsequently arrested and charged with possession of cocaine and attempting to export cocaine.

On the first charge, he was fined $800,000 or serve four months in prison and on the second, he was fined $900,000 or four months in prison.
