The contemporaries

Friday, November 09, 2012

HERE is a look at two of Stone Love's contemporaries, Kilamanjaro and Metro Media.

The Kilamanjaro sound system was founded in Kingston in 1969 by Noel 'Papa Jaro' Harper.

'Jaro' is generally regarded as the top 'sound' of the 1980s. It helped launch the careers of dancehall acts Early B, Super Cat, Jim Kelly, Burro Banton, and Ninjaman.

The 'set' was also known for promoting 'live artistes' in the 1980s. Among them Puddy Roots, Daddy Shark, Hammermouth, Charlie Chaplin, and Ironman.

Much of Jaro's success is credited to selectors like O Lord, Ricky Trooper, Freddie Kruegar, DJ Tarick, Mophead, Jeremy Lee, and Crazy D whose 'specials' won them many sound clashes.

Metro Media was started in 1974 by Lou Gooden in the central Kingston community of Woodford Park. Two years later, it had a new owner in Hadain 'Jimmy Metro' James.

In the 1980s, deejay Peter Metro came on board and drew a large fan base with his distinctive style. With the addition of selector Sky Juice (Christopher Blake) Metro Media became one of the most popular sound systems of that decade, playing in England, Japan and Canada.

Metro Media is still based in Woodford Park, and remains active on the dance circuit.
