UNITED States-based group, Major Lazer, heads to the Students' Union at the University of the West Indies, Mona later today for a free concert.

Major Lazer, a trio comprised of Diplo (producer of Paper Planes, Climax, Too Close), Jillionaire and Walshy Fire (of Black Chiney) have been performing since 2009.

Though based in the US, the group has been strongly influenced by Jamaica's Dancehall music and culture. They have fused this art form with other sounds from around the globe — from Asia to South America and everywhere in-between.

Diplo, proud to be able to bring this vision to life stated, "Major Lazer was founded from Dancehall. From Jamaicans, from the culture, what better way to give back than a free concert for all the college students and the fans? We love being here and hopefully everyone will see that in our performance."

The organisers of the event, The UWI Guild of Students, is projecting a good time for patrons.

"This will be an unforgettable welcome back for students on the first day of school. My vision for entertainment on campus is to do things that are outside the box and fresh, so we decided to give the students the ultimate welcome back present... a free concert. With the great support of the sponsors, we are able to offer this event completely free, all college students enter with only their college ID, everyone else will need to get a complimentary ticket from one of our sponsors," UWI Guild spokesperson Miguel Reid stated.

Major Lazer produced the catchy single, Pon de Floor featuring Vybz Kartel, which was sampled by Beyoncé for her mega hit Run the World (Girls). The group's work has snowballed and they have worked with international talents like No Doubt and Usher.
