Dear Editor,

Minister of Justice Delroy Chuck made several comments in the public domain concerning the arrests on Wednesday of former colleague and Minister of Education Ruel Reid, president of CMU Fritz Pinnock and others in the corruption/fraud probe.

The minister, commenting on the early morning raids, said that they took place like “Nicodemus in the night”. Really, Mr Chuck? He also stated that the director of public prosecutions (DPP) seemed not to have all the additional material or evidence. Does that really matter? The DPP must get the full dossier on the case in due time. Obviously investigators came up with additional material and evidence and found it warranted to make immediate arrests.

Minister Chuck went on to express regret about the accused not being granted immediate bail and went on to state “I don't get the impression that these persons are actually running away. They have made themselves available on all occasions, so in fact if an arrest should have been made, they could easily have been asked to come in so that they could be charged.”

Minister Chuck also said it was unfortunate that the matter has become so “salacious” that raids were carried out at the houses of the suspects while the police searched for more material.

Again, the minister's comments are out of line. He also questioned whether detectives are sure about what they are doing, questioned their professionalism and asked why investigations were taking so long.

Minister Chuck, sometimes it's best to keep your mouth shut.

The minister should refrain from making public statements about the case which involves his colleague and former Cabinet minister.
