On Wednesday, October 31, 2018, the Jamaica Customs Agency (JCA) will disembark in the parish of Clarendon, for its public education series “Customs Meets the Community” under the theme: “Reaching Our Customers Where They Are.” The event will be held at the St Gabriel's Anglican Church Hall in May Pen.

The “Customs Meets the Community” sessions are being held so that the JCA can better connect with customers, enhance its service delivery, and inform and educate stakeholders about clearance procedures and other customs-related matters.

Since May 2017, the Customs team has visited the parishes of St Elizabeth, St Catherine, Portland, St Ann and Westmoreland, where the sessions were received with great appreciation by participants, including school administrators, church leaders, health care workers, entrepreneurs, political representatives, farmers, vendors, returning residents, benevolent groups and importantly 'the man on the street.'

The event will be streamed live and people are being encouraged to tune in. The agency is also encouraging people with disabilities from within the parish to participate in the event. Sign language interpreters will be on hand to facilitate dialogue with people who are hearing-impaired or deaf.

Since the inception of the initiative the agency has taken a holistic approach in educating its stakeholders, and has collaborated with its border and regulatory agencies including the Plant Quarantine Unit, the Pesticides Control Authority, the Department of Cooperatives and Friendly Societies, the Agriculture Incentives Unit, and the Jamaica Intellectual Property Office – JIPO.

The Post and Telecommunications Department (Parcels Post/Central Sorting Office) and Trade Board Limited will be on board for the Clarendon engagement.

The agency has also partnered with the Social Development Commission (SDC), which has assisted with mobilisation efforts.
