VALENTINE'S Day is about celebrating love, and there are no rules that limit it to just romantic love. Here are some fun activities that you can take on with your children, that will have you spending quality time together and making lasting, loving memories.
Go to the zoo
Especially if you have smaller children, the zoo is a great place to go on Valentine's Day, as the kids will be fascinated by at least some of the animals there. You can teach them the meaning of love — and how important it is to be kind to others, including animals.
Go to the movies
If you don't mind squeezing past the throng of smitten couples waiting in line to get into the romantic movies, you will find that the children's shows are just as, or even more entertaining. Treat your children to viewing an animated film on the big screen, which will be a level up from the cartoons they are used to watching at home.
Valentine's Day cards, necklaces and hearts are not just for grown-ups. Get some craft supplies from your nearest bookstore and spend some time making keepsakes with your children. Write love letters, stating what you love most about each other. They don't have to win any awards for presentation — it's really the thought that counts.
Bask in nature
Parks, rivers ad beaches are great spots for family play dates. Have fun with your children doing the things that they enjoy doing most. Whether it's playing board games, a sport, or just lying around on a towel, the ultimate goal of spending time together as a family will be accomplished.
Make their favourite meal
If it's macaroni and cheese, make it extra special gourmet macaroni and cheese. Many children also love chocolate, so serve up some for dessert, in the name of Valentine's Day. Older children might also enjoy helping to prepare the meal, while they younger ones will enjoy pretending to help.
Say 'I love you'
Perhaps the most important activity is ensuring that your children know how much you love them. Kisses and hugs can never be too much, even if they push you away. This shouldn't be confined to Valentine's Day, but it's as great a day as any to remind them how much you love them.
