McConnell gets US podium finish

Friday, October 05, 2018

JAMAICA'S Fraser McConnell closed off his 2018 Americas Rallycross Series (ARX) debut season with a second-place finish in the ARX2 class finals at the series finale at the Circuit of Americas, Austin, Texas, last weekend.

“I'm super grateful to be on the podium for the last round of ARX2. After a lot of hard work, it was definitely nice to know we're going in the right direction,” McConnell told the Jamaica Observer's Auto magazine.

His visit to the podium was also capped off by a fourth-place finish in the ARX2 championship points. McConnell joined ARX Rallycross in July, driving the ARX2 class cars for the DirtFish Rallycross team.

“Finishing [in] fourth place in the championship is really good motivation for any possible future events. We had an unfortunate result in Quebec which threw contending for first out the window.”

McConnell's first ARX2 round had him tied points-wise at the top with American rallycross driver Conner Martell. However, the next round in Quebec, Canada, would throw a significant wrench in his season, dropping him to sixth in the points.

“Quebec was by far the most unfortunate event of my career so far. It was a learning experience that I will never forget. Having little to nothing go my way on the track such as punctures, malfunctions on the car, and heavy contact made it very hard to compete for points. But we never gave up and even though the points from Quebec didn't add up to an impressive amount, they still helped me seal the fourth place in the series.”

With the series done, McConnell reflected on the experience.

“Competing international is definitely a lot more intense than I'm used to, which required me to be a lot more aggressive. Learning to be aggressive and fast at the same time is something that I have started getting used to and it will definitely help me in the future.”

As for the future, the current Driver's Rallysport Club Stages Rally champion isn't sure about what 2019 and the ARX series will bring for him.

“The Dirtfish team was by far the best team in the paddock every single event and it was an honour to be competing with them. I would love to continue my career with them and grow as a driver, but before anything is confirmed the main focus is just any seat time.”
