JAMAICA became the first country in the Caribbean to receive the all-new BMW X2 when it was unveiled at the ATL Autobahn showroom on Lady Musgrave Rd, St Andrew, on Monday.

ATL Autobahn is the ATL Automotive division with responsibility for BMW and MINI.

“It's aimed at young professionals, those with an active lifestyle and lovers of the BMW brand looking for something new and exciting,” Christina Thwaites, group marketing manager at ATL Automotive, told the Jamaica Observer's Auto magazine.

The 2018 BMX X2 fills a gap in the BMW X line of vehicles, the X1, X3, X4, X5 and X6. As with current BMW model nomenclature, the even number denotes a coupé body style and BMW has billed the X2 as Sports Activity Coupé. There's very little question that it very much fits the part with its sloping rear roofline rather than the upright angled box shape of a regular sport utility vehicle. The sportier look does give it smaller dimensions than the X1, but doesn't impact interior passenger room.

“It's still larger than its European rivals,” said Sloane Jackson, head of business of ATL Autobahn.

Monday's Alpine White launch model was equipped with the optional M Performance package that included larger wheels, a sport-tuned suspension and a functional body kit, further enhancing its appearance. To make things a bit more playful than segment rivals, there are X2-specific colours on the charts.

Inside, material quality and style are familiar BMW, all led by the newest version of their iDrive infotainment system. Highlights include red leather, sport seats, an electronically operated rear hatch, LED headlights and a panoramic sunroof.

The BMW X2 is available in front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive. There are two engine choices: a 190-bhp TwinPower turbocharged two-litre; and a diesel to be available at a later date. The gas-powered X2 can hit 60mph in 7.7 seconds on its way to a top speed of 225kph. Even with all that performance, the X2 is fuel efficient as it's rated to be able to return 58.9 mpg in BMWs ECO-PRO mode.

The 2018 BMW X2 is now available at ATL Autobahn starting at $10,995,000.
