Drivers gear up Sunday sprint

JAMAICA's top-tier Dirt Sprint Racers are gearing up for some high-speed action this Sunday at the Badda Badda Raceway in Priory, St Ann.

The location, known for its smooth, compressed dirt track will host the second event of the six-part Jamaica National Sprint championship. The series is organised by Dean Corrodus, chairman of the Jamaica Millennium Motoring Club (JMMC), and is sponsored by The Automotive Performance Centre Ltd in Montego Bay.

"The competition will take place in several classes which are denoted predominately by engine size, vehicle weight and drive-train," said Corrodus, in a release to Auto.

"Classes include JA2 for two wheel drive cars with an engine capacity between 1300 and 1600cc (mainly Toyota Starlets, Corollas and Honda Civics) and JA3 for two wheel drive cars with an engine capacity between 1601 and 2,000 cc. The more powerful cars can be found in the JN8 and JA8 classes, where four wheel drive, turbo-charged cars with an engine capacity of 2,000cc are to be found (Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and Subaru Imprezas dominate these classes)," he continued.

Motorsports enthusiasts looking for a battle can expect to see those started in the first round of the competition which was held at Jamwest Speedway on January 15. In the overall championship standings, Daryl King had managed to turn the tables on Jordan Powell (who had beaten him in the JA2 class) to capture the win of the three lap Top Ten championship run, and now leads with 20 points ahead of Powell with 15 points and Matthew Gore with 12 points, followed by Maurice Whittingham with 10 points and Dean Corrodus with 8. As a special treat there will also be a special taxi man challenge to be run on the day, with entertainment and music provided by KillaMilla and DJ Blaxx. The action starts at 12 noon and runs till sunset.
