303 Road deaths for 2011

IT was another deadly year on Jamaican road. Approximately 303 persons died in auto-related accidents, according to statistics from the Road Safety Unit at the Ministry of Transport and Works.
The number was 16 less than the deaths recorded in 2010 and a considerable drop from the 347 casualties of 2009. Clarendon, with 29 deaths, was the parish with the most traffic fatalities; Portland had the lowest number of deaths with two.
One of the Governmentappointed National Road Safety Council’s biggest projects is its ‘Below 300’ campaign which it launched in 2008 with the Road Safety Unit.
Their goal is to get the number of road deaths in Jamaica under 300 for the first time since 1998.
