Commuters need help!

Dear Editor,


I live in Portmore and travel along Marcus Garvey Drive every day to reach my place of employment. However, as the months progress and the holiday season nears it is becoming very unbearable to be out at the bus stops in the evenings trying just to get a number three.


There have been instances when I have had to take the Spanish Town express and come off on the dirt road on Dyke Road to be able to get something to go home in the evenings. When that is not an option I have to take the express Portmore buses and come off at Portmore Mall.
I have made complaints, but still there is no level of improvement.


However, I am not the only commuter who has been experiencing complete disregard from the State-run Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC). When you are out there in the evenings the drivers just fly past the bus stops as if “we a nuh nuhbadi”. It doesn't matter how empty the buses are, the drivers simply refuse to stop and pick up people who rely heavily on this means of transportation to get home. People have to be forking out more than they bargained for to pay for transportation to get home. And, let's not forget how unsafe it is, especially when it gets later down in the evenings. People are exposed to robberies and all sorts of unknown evil that lurks along the corridor, especially the Greenwich Farm and “Wharf” sections.


I am asking for this matter to be dealt with rather swiftly as the holiday season approaches. I recommend more buses be sent out on routes which have a higher passenger rate. And if the Government-owned company thinks this is just a made-up story I have footage to back my claims.
This has been a long-standing issue that needs to be addressed, and the proper systems need to be put in place so commuters can go about their business. As well, strong action needs to be taken against those drivers who continue to neglect to pick up people at bus stops.
