KINGSTON, Jamaica — Education Minister Ruel Reid has described a voice note sent to a teacher by a 17-year-old Wolmer's Boys' School student threatening violence and murder, as a “worrying situation,” especially with the proliferation of social media and “knowing how these acts play out.”

Reid, when contacted by OBSERVER ONLINE, said that it shows that our children can be under stress and how they may respond.

“Certainly with our guidance and counselling and national parenting support commission we have to be more proactive in identifying those children at risk,” said Reid.

He encouraged people dealing with children to look out for the stress signs, as some actions also speak to the dysfunctionality in the home and as such children and parents need guidance and support.

“It's a very complex situation and requires us as a ministry to provide support and our professionals to be able to identify these problems and respond,” Reid stated.
