FEBRUARY 14 is a day when many lovers celebrate with their partners in a way that they believe will make each other happy. But the newly broken-hearted souls who have not yet moved on will find themselves pining over their lost love.
When All Woman asked sex therapist Dr Sidney McGill how to cope with missing your ex on Valentine's Day, he acknowledged first of all that the romantic vibrations floating in the air could increase your desire to be with your ex. As sexual beings, he said, we yearn to be cuddled and pampered, and most of all, to be shown love.
But he recommended that instead of sinking into depression, we should concentrate on loving ourselves and enjoying the company of others who genuinely love and care for us.
He shares tips below on how to cope this Valentine's Day when all you can think about is your ex.
Remember that there is a reason why you are no longer together, and it is important that you remind yourself why
There is a reason things didn't work out, whether it's because your partner wouldn't give up bad habits, you couldn't forgive the person for hurting you, or you were just not able to reconcile your differences. The best decision, therefore, was to part.
Do something that you love
Whether it's shopping, watching a good comedy, catching up on reading your favourite literature, or cooking your favourite meal, just do whatever makes you happy. Make sure it is something that you enjoy and not what you would do together, because that would only be drawing you closer to his memory.
Have people over
If all your friends are not too busy getting it on, then invite them over to your place. Drink wine, eat, watch a good movie, listen to some nice music, or just enjoy pleasant conversation. Regardless of what you decide on, distracting yourself will help pull you out of the doldrums.
Take a mini vacation or go some place you have always wanted to visit
Treat yourself to a spa day or spend a weekend with friends at a nice hotel or villa. Do something that will allow you to get the pampering that you deserve.
If you're a workout person, get physical
Exercise can help you feel good both physically and emotionally. Make a great playlist with music that will not remind you of your ex, then just go running, jogging, or head to the gym, whichever is more convenient for you.
